You have just made a conscious effort to improve your health and well-being.

By typing in or saying the phrase “I want to be well” you have begun a chain reaction within your body-mind to transform
dis-ease into wellness. It is a statement of intent, a decision you have made to improve your current state of health.

Statements like this have immediate and profound effects on our ability to maintain the state of homeostasis, a biological
term for that state in which all of the body’s functions are balanced and working optimally for any given situation.

I would like to take this opportunity, however, to fine-tune this statement for your benefit.

The use of the word “want” also suggests a lack of something, in this case “wellness”. Whenever we say we want something, it implies we want for something, meaning we haven’t got it or achieved it yet. It sets the agenda and creates the target but lacks
the transformational energy that is required if we are to achieve this aim.

What is required is an affirmation, a statement of what is, although at this point you may not be experiencing this,
hence your search for a solution.

That which “is” is a state of total wellness (or wholeness) and is hidden from us. Our duty is to spend time
rediscovering this state, or as much of it as possible in the time we have left.
This innate knowledge of a more holistic state gives us hope and the determination to carry on, I believe.

Therefore to say something like “I am well” would seem to be the obvious alternative to “I want to be well”. But even though it fulfills the definition of an affirmation, in practice it is too broad and diffuse to make a significant impact on our body-mind, even though it appears to be the logical choice. I will attempt to show you how to find specific affirmations which address your particular needs.

For some, however, it may be all that is necessary to trigger healing mechanisms in us which will indeed transform and maintain us in an ideal state of wellness, but for most of us there are many obstacles to overcome before such a statement can be effective.

These obstacles may be physical (trauma, injury, disability, malnourishment, environmental etc), physiological
(genetic pre-disposition, neuro-chemical etc) or psychological (stress-related, attitudinal, behavioural etc).
A vast array of potential and real threats to our well-being exist and can affect any one of us at any time.

Therefore it is important to consider how we can use affirmations, and in what form,
together with the appropriate interventions and activities which will support these mental and behavioural changes.
